5-String American Fit J-Bass® Shapes

Over the last decade, many contemporary 5-string J-style basses, especially high-volume OEM instruments, adopted the longer American Standard V lengths but returned to the slimmer original J-style width. Sire is a visible example, but they’re not alone.

The evolution is fascinating and makes perfect sense. Fender created a popular instrument with single coil pickups that players often wanted to upgrade. Pickup builders created shells to match. Some of those pickup builders made their shells smaller to be sure they would fit. High volume builders decided to use the width of the 4-string Standard size. New instrument builders then routed their basses for the smaller sizes, and here we are.

It’s a size Fender never made, but the market did. Players trying to upgrade these instruments quickly discovered that nothing fit cleanly. So we built a shell specifically for this emerging format. It fits the modern 5-string J-style cavity profile without modification.

Your voice is a combination of your pickups, strings, instrument materials and construction, and playing technique. The voice of your pickups is determined by the sensing structures – the magnetic field projected onto the strings and the interaction of the magnetic field with the coils.
We offer several carefully designed pickups series with different sensing structures so you can develop your voice. Check out the sensing structures below – Blue represents a South magnetic field, and Red represents a North magnetic field. Opposite polarity fields is used for hum-cancelling.
